Few know of the legendary cave in the Stephens County town of Marlow, Oklahoma. It was once the hideout of the legendary outlaw Marlow brothers. According to lore, in Marlow, the brothers used to avoid capture from law enforcement by hiding in a cave within Wild Horse Creek. In June, 2004, a city worker discovered the cave after the tire of his riding mower fell through a sinkhole while in Redbud Park.
The Outlaw Cave can be viewed by appointment and guided tours are also offered by proper arrangement.
When Marlow was first being settled, the Marlow family settled about one mile from the Chisholm Trail near Wild Horse Creek. During a crazy turn of events, the five Marlow sons were unjustly accused of horse thievery and four were arrested in 1888. While being transferred to a prison in Texas, they were ambushed, and only two brothers survived. They escaped and became outlaws. Even a movie starring John Wayne, “The Sons of Katie Elder,” has been made about this true story.
