Fine Gourd Art Classes with Donna Welch

The ARTesian Gallery and Studios in Sulphur, Oklahoma offers art classes for all levels, from beginning artists to professional artists. Some of the art classes include “make and take” classes and specifically designed classes for visitors to the area.

The ARTesian Gallery and Studios will be hosting Fine Gourd Art Classes with Donna Welch.

Donna Courtney Welch is a Chickasaw citizen. Welch’s primary art form utilizes a gift from the earth, the gourd.  Her connection to this fruit, which is in the pumpkin family, began with her first project 20 years ago.  Gourds pre date pottery and are a plant found on every continent.

She researches traditional Southeastern Indian designs and incorporates the ancient motifs in her work, utilizing a balance of geometry along with the creative process.  If a mistake is made, she figures out a way to integrate that into the design and just like in life- mistakes are made and you move on.

Welch is also a traditional Chickasaw storyteller.  Her art has been exhibited in Fontana, CA.  Welch has displayed her gourds at the ARTesian Gallery & Studios in Sulphur, OK and the Chokma’si Gallery in Ada, OK as well as events at Southeastern Art Show and Market (SEASAM) 2017 and the Dynamic Women of the Chickasaw Nation Conference 2018.

Donna Welch signs her pieces “Dancing Star” which is her Chickasaw name given to her by her late father, Ben Courtney, son of original Chickasaw enrollee, Willie Courtney.

Each class is $50 per person. Class sizes are approximately 10-12 people and fill up very quickly. This month's class will feature: Carved Gourd Luminaria.
