January is National Bald Eagle Month!
The annual return of the bald eagles to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area is always a cause for celebration during the winter season! Join us for special Eagle Watch activities to highlight this extraordinary bird. This event is a collaboration between the Chickasaw Cultural Center and the National Park Service.
The Eagle Watch starts with a ranger presentation at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area Travertine Nature Center, followed by an observation of eagles at the Lake of the Arbuckles. Make sure to bring your camera, binoculars, comfortable shoes and warm clothes.
Activities at the Chickasaw Cultural Center include a special showing of the PBS documentary American Eagle at 1 p.m. and make-and-take activities that include bird feeders, corn husk dolls and construction paper eagles (Jan. 18), corn husk flowers and paper eagle puppets (Jan. 25)!
For more information, please call the Travertine Nature Center at (580) 622-7234 or the Chickasaw Cultural Center at (580) 622-7130.
The American bald eagle almost reached the point of extinction, but the combined efforts of many private citizens, elected officials and government agencies led to the removal of bald eagles from the endangered species list in 2007. This increase in the eagle population allows us the privilege of seeing these birds in the wild. Come join the Chickasaw National Recreation Area for Bald Eagle Watch 2020!
Afterwards, make a special trip over to the Chickasaw Visitor Center located right next to the CNRA! This new center is a nature lover's paradise, designed to provide information and tell the story of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. The 8,500 square-foot facility features an information desk and kiosks, a multi-purpose gallery, gift shop, media room, pergola style patio area, public restrooms, bike share program and complimentary coffee service! Stick around and shop for cool nature related books and items, American Indian jewelry and handcrafted gifts, Chickasaw Country travel souvenirs and more! Also, be sure to check out the beautiful works of art and local photography by Native American artists on display!
