Plan a Low-Key Memorial Day Weekend in Chickasaw Country

It’s no secret that planning for Memorial Day weekend looks a little different this year. You may be making plans for the holiday weekend already, planning a small cookout or spending time with loved ones. Or, maybe you haven’t made plans quite yet. With all the change in our midst, we’re glad to know that no matter where you are, Memorial Day is still a time to celebrate our country, and it also means that summer is here!

This year, we’re highlighting a few of our off the beaten path locations to make your Memorial Day weekend fuss-free and low-key.

Redbud Park

Head to the northwest region to enjoy the holiday as a Marlow Outlaw! Once home to the famous outlaw Marlow brothers, Marlow is now a small town full of a contemporary town in Chickasaw Country’s northwest region, known for its ties to western history and bursting with opportunities for fun. Start your Memorial Day trip with a journey to Red Bud Park. The park spans ten city blocks and features a performance stage, horseshoe pits, a splash pad and a 13,000 square foot Western-style playground. Enjoy a nice picnic of fresh watermelon and other home-grown produce from nearby Dorian’s Watermelon Stand.

Veterans Lake

Escape the crowds at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur by relaxing in the western portion of the park at Veterans Lake. The 67-acre lake was named in honor of American war veterans and has nearly three miles of shoreline, perfect for small boat use, fishing, hiking and picnicking. The area is also excellent for wildlife viewing and is home to a small herd of bison that can sometimes be seen in the nearby bison pasture.

Sweeten up the holiday by making a stop in Davis for fried pies! Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies have been serving their homemade, tasty treats for over 30 years. With just one bite, you’ll see why they have become a south-central Oklahoma road trip staple.

Glenwood Park

Spend Memorial Day getting fresh air at Glenwood Park in downtown Ada. Glenwood Park is perfect for all ages with walking trails, playground equipment, skate park and an outdoor pool to cool off on hot days.

When everyone has had their fun in the sun, make the short drive over to Janice’s Bar-B-Q in Stratford. This friendly, country-style joint boasts about the biggest and freshest fish in Oklahoma as well as their fall-off-the-bone ribs. The menu features a delicious selection of salads, burgers, chicken, steak, fried catfish, and of course, barbecue that are perfect to add to the Memorial Day celebration feast.

Pennington Creek Park

Explore the trails at Pennington Creek Park in Tishomingo. The park sits right next to Pennington Creek and is a local favorite because of its swimming hole near the dam, its great walking trails and its close proximity to downtown Tishomingo. While exploring the park, be sure to visit the Johnston County War Memorial. The breathtaking memorial features a restored Blue Angel and tank on display.

After exploring the park, be sure to walk on over to Main Street to explore. Main Street Tishomingo is home to many great shops like Junk Stars and Murray on Main, as well as Blake Shelton’s restaurant, Ole Red. At Ole Red there’s plenty to enjoy between the great food and great music.
