Kick-off the summer months and the busy tourism season of June through September with National Travel and Tourism Week in Chickasaw Country from May 5-11.
National Travel and Tourism Week is sponsored by the U.S. Travel Association. This year’s theme is “Travel Matters.” We are shining a spotlight on Chickasaw Country’s history and why travel matters to south-central Oklahoma. So, pull out your scrapbooks, and let’s travel down memory lane.
Explore the Chickasaw National Recreation Area
The Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur has an incredible history, and is the perfect place to celebrate tourism in Chickasaw Country. Before you go, read this blog for information about the recreation area and fun places to explore.
Watch a Movie at the McSwain Theater
The McSwain Theater is a staple in the Ada community. It has been the stage to local legends and country music stars including Chickasaw Country’s own, Blake Shelton. Every Thursday you can catch a movie playing on the big screen. Before you visit, read this blog for history about the theater.
Hike at Lake Murray State Park
Take a picture at Turner Falls Park
Turner Falls is especially beautiful this time of year! It is a great place to have a picnic, go for a hike, or take a selfie. While you’re in the area, be adventurous and take a ride on the 777 Zip Line.
Travel to the Chickasaw Tourism and Information Centers
You don’t want to miss this! FREE popcorn and old-fashioned travel games will be available at the centers throughout the week. You can stop in at the Chickasaw Nation Welcome Center in Davis, Chickasaw Nation Information Center in Tishomingo, Chickasaw Visitor Center in Sulphur, and the Thackerville Tourism Information Center.
While you’re out and about traveling, remember to take pictures and use #VisitChickasaw to share your photos with us! We would love to see where you are traveling.
