I step up to the little white ball nestled on a perfect bed of manicured Bermuda grass. Peeking through my range finder at the pin ahead, I discover that my drive has placed me in a textbook position on the fairway, 146 yards from that little white flagstick. The wind is gently blowing across my body and the ground is soft with early-morning dew not yet evaporated by the warm summer sunshine.
“Seven is the club,” I whisper to myself as I unsheathe the glistening stick from my orange and black bag.
After one practice swing, I stare down my target, visualizing my shot. I set my feet, line up the clubface and look down at that little round, white vessel that carries my hopes of a birdie attempt. Straight arm, don’t break at the wrist, big hip turn, transfer the weight forward, compress at impact… I make clean contact with the ball, leaving a gorgeous dollar-bill sized divot in the soft turf. I’ve striped it.
Striped it right into a post oak that I never saw on the front-right of the green.
I may not be the BEST golfer out there, but I guarantee you that I’m one of the most passionate about the sport that you’ll ever meet. When you think golf, you might think of Scotland, or Florida, or California as premier golf destinations, but I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to travel all over the world to get your fix of quality golf courses. Right here in Chickasaw Country you’ll find quality golf elements and pristine tracts of land that will challenge every level of golfer. Here are a few of my favorite courses you should make plans to travel to this fall:
Welcome to Oklahoma! Located just off Exit 3 on I-35, WinStar Golf Club boasts 36 immaculate holes (including a brand new nine that just opened this summer!). Home to the Volvik World Long Drive Championship; you never know who you might meet on the driving range!
Mark Twain once said, “Golf is a good walk spoiled.” If that’s the case, this is the place I’d want to spoil it. One of Chickasaw Country’s newest (and hottest) golf clubs, The Territory combines natural features and state-of-the-art amenities to provide the ultimate golfing experience. This isn’t just a hidden gem tucked away on the west side of Duncan; Golfweek ranked The Territory as one of the Top 50 Residential Courses in the country and Golf Digest ranks it as a Top 5 course in Oklahoma.
If you’re looking for golf with a view, look no further than Chickasaw Pointe. A Par 72 tract that can be extended to just over 7,000 yards from the championship tees, you’ll enjoy the lush, rolling fairways and approach shots that overlook unforgettable vistas of Lake Texoma.
There you go. My three favorite courses in Chickasaw Country. Don’t worry; I’ve listed out a few more great courses you’ll enjoy, regardless of where you might be in Chickasaw Country when you need a quick round.
When you’re out swinging the old hickory sticks, don’t forget to tag us in your photos and let us know where you’re playing! Use the hashtag #RouteCC on Twitter and Instagram. If you’re ever looking for a golfing buddy, let me know! I’m always down for a round.
Until next time,
